Full Sail University welcomed Recording Arts graduate and Beyoncé’s full-time professional audio engineer, Jordan “DJ Swivel” Young to campus for an exclusive presentation and guest lecture held at the Full Sail Live venue on Wednesday, October 5.
After graduating from Full Sail University, Jordan “DJ Swivel” Young worked as Ken ‘Duro’ Ifill’s assistant engineer. In 2006, he engineered Fabolous’ fourth studio album, From Nothin’ to Somethin’. Since then, he has furthered his career by working on projects for some of the most prominent artists in music, including Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, and Michael Jackson, to name a few.
In 2010, DJ Swivel became Beyoncé’s full-time engineer, mixing her I AM World Tour DVD, which was certified double platinum, and recording her much anticipated fourth studio album, 4, released on June 28 of this year.
During the event, DJ Swivel discussed his career in the music industry working alongside Beyoncé and shared insight on his experience in the studio as an engineer for numerous top-selling artists. Following the lecture, he participated in a Q&A session with students from Full Sail’s Recording Arts and Music Business degree programs.
“It’s kind of crazy because I don’t feel like Full Sail was that long ago – it was six years ago for me – so it’s an interesting perspective to be on the other side of it,” said Jordan “DJ Swivel” Young. “But I’m happy to be here. I remember being a student during these presentations, and it was great to hear from people who were actually doing it, actually able to record with different artists. If I’m able to impart any knowledge on them I would consider that a successful trip. Even if they learn just one thing, I’ll feel like I’ve been helpful.”
In addition to the lecture, Swivel hosted sessions in Full Sail’s recording studios where he was able to provide live demonstrations of his in-studio methods while mentoring a select group of students.
“We are proud to welcome Jordan back to campus for this unique guest lecture opportunity,” said Dana Roun, Director of Audio Arts for Full Sail University. “DJ Swivel brings a real and tangible sense of inspiration and experience to those students who are looking to build careers in this industry.”
